Arkham Horror Games from Fantasy Flight

Arkham Horror expansions let you add new game elements and elder terrors to your Lovecraftian board game experience. Arkham Horror is the classic Cthulhu board game originally published by Chaosium in 1987, but revised by Fantasy Flight Games in 2005 and 2007. Each version lets you and a group of players take on the role of investigators in the world created by H.P. Lovecraft, moving around the fictional Massachusetts town of Arkham and seeking to stop cultists from raising one of the Old Ones from its sleep. Fantasy Flight Games has released a series of expansions for Arkham Horror in the last few years, which increase the fun and terror of fighting Cthulhu, Yogsothoth, and their kind.

The current list of Arkham Horror expansions includes:

Each presents new challenges, along with new skills, encounter cards, and Mythos cards. I'll discuss each expansion in its turn.

Arkham Horror: Curse of the Dark Pharaoh - 1st Expansion

Arkham Horror Expansion - The Curse of the Dark PharaohThe Curse of the Dark Pharaoh expansion focuses on Nyarlathotep, who is, in many ways, the key villain of the Cthulhu Mythos. Nyarlathotep is the Crawling Chaos, said to walk the Earth gathering followers. In many ways, Nyarlathotep is the oddest of the Outer Gods, as he seems less alien. One of his avatars is the Black Pharaoh.

Curse of the Dark Pharaoh is a card-based expansion which contains 166 cards you can mix into the original card decks. Included in this expansion are 7 new ally cards, 45 Arkham city cards, 27 gate cards, 4 benefit/detriment cards, 21 new spells, and 18 cards that decree one "barred from a neighborhood". Lovecraft introduced the original story (simply named "Nyarlathotep") this expansion is based on, with an Egyptian exhibit coming to town, and so you also get 22 exhibit item cards, representing the ancient relics from Egypt.

Arkham Horror: Dunwich Horror

New Arkham Horror Investigators: Dunwich Horror ExpansionDunwich Horror was the second expansion for Arkham Horror, based on the story of (fictional) Miskatonic University professors who investigate the disappearance of The Necronomicon from the school's library.

Dunwich Horror is a large-box expansion, complete with 8 new Arkham Horror investigators and 4 Ancient Ones to fight, as well as 15 item cards and 25 unique items. You also get 21 new spells, 11 new skill cards, 36 Mythos cards, allies, more monster tokens, and more gate cards. This expansion also includes new game mechanics, including the ability to take a train to the town of Dunwich (represented with its own game board). Other rules include an alternate option for when your sanity or stamina is reduced to 0, along with a rule that says sealed gates are no longer permanently sealed.

Arkham Horror: The King in Yellow

Arkham Horror Expansion - The King in Yellow"The King in Yellow" was a story about a stage play which drove those who saw it mad, mainly because it was tied to the horrific creature known as Hastur. The King in Yellow expansion is another card-based expansion of the game, though it introduces one important new game element: the Herald. You also get Blight Cards, which can turn friends and allies into madmen. On the positive side, players get 7 new powerful potential abilities, along with new items and spells.

Arkham Horror: Kingsport Horror

New Arkham Horror Characters - The Kingsport HorrorThe Kingsport Horror Expansion is another big-box expansion which takes the action to the town of Kingsport. You'll get the gameboard for Kingsport, and dozens of new Arkham Horror characters, gate cards, and mythos cards. You get location cards for both Arkham and Kingsport, along with waterway tokens. You get rift progress tokens, Bast tokens, and four dozen Eihort's brood markers. Also included are 45 Ancient One plot cards and 16 epic battle cards, which brings me to one key rules expansion.

Kingsport introduces players to Guardians, which are the helpful counterparts to the Heralds introduced in The King in Yellow. This offers a powerful new ally in your war with these alien gods and their cultists.

Arkham Horror: Black Goat of the Woods

Arkham Horror: Black Goat of the Woods ExpansionShub-Niggurath is known as "The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young", and she is classified as a Great Old One by H.P. Lovecraft himself. Though Lovecraft never described her, Shub-Niggurath is often invoked in spells in his stories. This expansion for the Arkham Horror is a small expansion (cards) which contains 76 investigator cards (items, spells), 88 Mythos cards, 9 new monster markers, and a Herald sheet. You can also learn about the rules for corruption, which holds an allure for those desperate to stop the horrors beyond.

Arkham Horror: Innsmouth Horror

Arkham Horror: Innsmouth HorrorLearn what the "Innsmouth Look" is all about in Innsmouth Horror, the sixth expansion in the Arkham Horror series. This expansion introduces the Deep Ones, Personal Stories for the investigators, and the strange pact which has kept Innsmouth going all these years. You get 18 new investigators, 2 new Heralds, and 8 new Ancient Ones. In all, this expansion offers over 300 cards and the expansion game board for the creepy town of Innsmouth. Watch out for "Ghatanothoa’s Visage" tokens.

Arkham Horror: The Lurker at the Threshold

The Lurker at the ThresholdThe Lurker at the Threshold introduces a couple of game elements which give Arkham Horror a deeper and richer quality. The first of these is the 12 relationship cards. At the beginning of the game, each player draws one of these cards, which is a card shared with the player to their left. This indicates the relationship these two players have, including options such as business associates and students of the arcane. These represent a shared advantage these players have in their investigation, and remind me somewhat of the character creation system in the innovative Spirit of the Century roleplaying game.

The second game element which jumps out about The Lurker at the Threshold expansion is the 24 Dark Pact cards, which represent attempts by the forces of horror to lure investigators into bargains for power. Included are 8 blood pact cards, 8 soul pacts, and 8 bound ally cards. You also get a new herald sheet, 18 new Gate Markers (each with a unique power) to replace the originals, 56 total Investigator cards, and 110 total Ancient One cards.

Arkham Horror: Miskatonic Horror

Arkham Horror Expansions: Miskatonic HorrorMiskatonic Horror is a 2011 Arkham Horror expansion which includes over 450 new cards, which in many ways works to expand many of the other expanded supplements that have been released. For instance, you get new exhibit item cards for the Curse of the Black Pharaoh expansion, Blessings of Nodens and Visions of Hypnos for The Kingsport expansion, and 20 new cult encounter cards for The Black Goat of the Woods.

You get expanded card decks for all 7 previous Arkham Horror expansions, including Dunwich locations and horror cards for the Dunwich Horror, similar additions for the Innsmouth Horror, more blight cards for The King in Yellow, and additional relationship cards for The Lurker at the Threshold. The Miskatonic Horror expansion touches on all parts of Arkham Horror, expanding the world of horror for anyone who enjoys the Arkham Horror board game.
