Are You Game
A Board Games Store
Are You Game.com
The AreYouGame.com website is well-designed, easy to access and shop around in, and attractively laid-out. Available games are categorized in a variety of ways, including by theme. Especially good here are the kids sections -- think Disney, Nickelodeon, Clue Junior, etc. You can browse games by how appropriate they have been judged to be for a particular age group.
Are You Game has a warm heart – their enthusiasm for games pours off the web page – and their commitment to the business shows in the number of awards and accolades the website has won. Once featured in Forbes Best of the Web, the site's buzz grew exponentially. Appearing also on the list of Time Magazine's Best Toy Shopping Site, and featuring an Amazon z Shop rating of five stars, it's clear that this is a site you can trust.
Shoppers rave about the selection of "odd" or hard-to-locate items, and I found three or four sets of cards and dominos one might usually have to discover at an antique store to use – Canasta cards, for example, and an awesome set of Spinner dominos featuring the old-school metallic spinner. Don't just shop for Candy Land for the new nephew – dig and discover old games you played with your family, or a new version of an old classic you'd like to try.
For lovers of word games like Boggle, Are You Game.com is a treasure trove. While no specific "category" for Word Games appears on the website (a major oversight) the Learning Games section is a great place to start. I quickly found a word game I'd been previously unaware of, A to Z, and right on the sales page there appeared many reviews from shoppers who had played it before as well as two different programs built-in to the website to refer me to other games of interest – the ubiquitous Others Who Bought This Also Bought feature as well as a You May Enjoy section.
That is how I stumbled onto the Scrabble selection here, which is better than any variety I've seen in any retail store. From the traditional Hasbro Scrabble box game to untraditional versions like Pick Two Deluxe and the close cousin of Scrabble Word Rummy, there is a crossword puzzle game for all skill levels.
Particularly of interest here is the Super Deluxe Turntable edition of Scrabble – weighing in at just under fifty bucks, this is the edition of Scrabble to give as a gift, an impressive edition featuring the all-important turntable built right in. The Super Deluxe edition also features a bigger board with more bonus chances, so traditionalists might scoff – this is Scrabble for the younger generation, a fast-paced game focused more around double and triple-scoring than the original.
Also featured are two or three junior versions, and the Espanol edicion – I've used the Spanish version as a teaching tool before with great results.
As a major retailer, Are You Game of course accept all sorts of payment – every credit card you can imagine and countless web-based payment systems. As I read shopper reviews of the site, I encounter stories of firecracker-fast shipping (usually within two business days) and proclamations that users found their game for the lowest prices anywhere.
More importantly, users include their story – how they found a game to give their niece or friend's new baby, often the game is tied to an important emotional note in their lives, something they can share with the new member of their family. This is the true legacy of AreYouGame.com – how they appear as a warm grandfatherly figure in the retail world among so many cold and impersonal giants.
